Swans (Year 1 and 2)

Welcome to Swans class.

Class Teacher: Miss Extence

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Boyle, Miss Piggott (am) Miss Johnson

PE is every Tuesday - Children need to have their kits in school. These can be kept on their pegs until Tuesday  and taken home occasionally to be washed.

Homework is set on a FRIDAY and needs to be returned by the following FRIDAY.

Ted goes home with the person who has read the most at home during the week!

Spelling test is every Friday  (on a write, cover, check sheet). These will be sent home every week and children will be given the opportunity to practise in school as well as at home. Please encourage your children to learn these. They are words that cannot be sounded out with our Fred Fingers, instead, the children need to simply learn the letter patterns.

This term we are learning about Florence Nightingale. We are using the story map to help us.

3.7.17: We had a fantastic day trip to Wembury beach this week! The weather was perfect. We found some crabs and shells on the beach, then we splashed in the shallow part of the sea to cool down. We have scrumptious lunch with our friends then walked back to the coach. Have a look at the pictures...

26.6.17: During the week, year 1 have been busy bees learning about Australia and finding facts in our topic books from Plymouth Library. We found out about lots of different animals that live there and we looked at the differences between the animals that live here and in Australia. Keegan found out that in Australia they have a special net in the sea to stop sharks from coming too close to where people are swimming! Unfortunately, our trip was cancelled due to bad weather, but it has been rearranged until next Tuesday 4th July. Fingers crossed that the sun comes back out! We had a look at things to do at the beach, and we discovered that many years ago there was a puppet show called 'Punch and Judy' and we created our own puppet show to perform to the rest of the class.

19.6.17: Miss Crouchley and Miss Hammond have been assessing what the children have learnt this year, during this week. We have had a few tests to check what the children have remembered. Well done to everyone for their hard work and concentration. We have begun to innovate our class story 'Sally and the Limpet' and we have thought of ways to change parts of the story to write our own in a group. The children also took part in Sport day! Well done to all of year 1 for their fantastic skipping and running.

12.6.17: Year 1 have had a super busy this week learning about different animals and their habitats in science. We looked at grouping them differently and learnt that all animals can be grouped as mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects. We learnt that humans are mammals because we give birth to live young and we get milk from our mothers. We looked at how other types of animals are born and how they feed their young. We learnt our new class story; Sally and the limpet and added actions to you to help us remember the words.

5.6.17: This week in Year 1 we have started our new topic: Are beaches the same all over the world? We will be looking at beaches in the UK and beaches around the world, in particular, in Australia. Year 1 will be going to Wembury beach on Friday 30th June as a treat for all of their hard work this year! Please can parents and carers return the slip to Miss Crouchley and Mrs Osborne as soon as possible. Year 1 also welcomed their new class pets this week, two goldfish; Goldie and Sharky. We will be learning how to look after them, and other pets.

22.5.17: It is the final week of the first Summer term, and year 1 have been building aeroplanes using junk modelling bits they have brought in from home. We designed our aeroplanes and labelled what we needed, then made a shopping list ready to make them. Our planes were fantastic! Well done to all of year 1 for their fantastic design work this week. It has been very hot and the sun has been shining all week, so please can grown ups put sun cream in our bags for us to reapply at break times and lunch times. Thank you :-)

15.5.17: In Year 1 we have been taking care of our beans that we have been growing in the classroom. Some of the beans have been growing much quicker than the others! We know that they need; water, soil and sun light to grow big and strong. In maths we have been measuring using liquids. We measured water in a measuring jug and estimated which containers could hold more or less than the  measuring jug, which could hold 1000ml = 1l.

8.5.17: During the week in maths Year 1 have been learning to add ten to 2-digit numbers. We made ten using ten sticks and ones using units, then added another ten to the tens column on our place value chart. Then we counted the total. We noticed that the tens number got bigger by 1 and the units stayed the same. Then we looked at taking away ten from a 2-digit number. In Talk 4 Writing we finished learning 'The Enormous Turnip' and we added actions to help us to remember the story off by heart. Next, we acted out the story and freeze framed each part in small groups. We started to think about how to innovate the story to write our own version next week. Ryan had a great idea to have a gigantic carrot in his story!

1.5.17: This week in Year 1 we have been very busy learning the new Talk 4 Writing story; The Enormous Turnip. We added actions to help us to remember the words to each part of the story, and practised in pairs. Can you re-tell this to an adult at home? In Maths we have been learning to double numbers to 10, some people had a go at doubling larger numbers to 20. Doubling is the same as adding the same number again. Get an adult to test you: 2+2=__? 3+3=__? 4+4=__? 5+5=__? etc... We also learnt about old modes of transport in our Topic work, for 'Why do people travel to new places?' and looked at old boats called 'longboats' that the Vikings used to travel to the Oakley Islands. Take a look at some of Year 1's drawings...

24.4.17: This week Year 1 have been learning to find odd and even numbers. We investigated whether Miss Crouchley was right... 'When I count in my 2s, all the numbers are even.' She was right! All even numbers end in: 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Odd numbers end with 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Year 1 have been practising counting up and down in their 2s to and from the dinner hall. Can you test them on this at home? We have also had a busy week finishing writing our instructions for 'How to catch an Alien'. We learnt the instructions with actions, to help us write our own instructions for how to catch our invented monster! In science we have been learning about plants, and have started a bean diary for our very own bean plant that we planted on Monday with Miss Hammond.

17.4.17: Welcome back after a lovely warm Easter break. Year 1 have been right back into their learning with our new topic 'Why do people travel to new places?' We have been thinking about how and why people travel. Our homework is to create an image of a mode of transport for our display board in the classroom. In maths this week we have learnt to find the difference between two numbers within 20. The children have learnt to count back from the biggest number, using their fingers to help. We know that the difference is the same as a subtraction sum. In writing we have planned and written a recount of our Easter Holidays, remembering to use adjectives to describe in more detail and make our writing more interesting. Year 1 also finished learning the story map for the instructions 'How to catch an alien!'

27.3.17: It's the final week of the Spring term at Mount Wise, and what a fantastic last week! For science week we had lots of visitors; owls from Fowey, Bruce the science man, students from Plymouth University and Babcock engineers. We learnt to make floating rafts out of a range of objects. We learnt about our senses and what we use them for. We learnt a lot about owls and had the opportunity to see them up close and take home a feather. We also made healthy smoothies with Miss Crouchley using our favourite fruit!

20.3.17: We are approaching the end of term and have been completing a lot of tests and assessments this week. Well done to all of year 1 for their hard work and great concentration. Remember to practise your Mad Maths Minutes as often as possible at home to ensure you get 30/30 within 2 minutes and a prize! This week we have been learning to tell the time to o'clock in digital and analogue. Can you tell an adult where the big and little hands on a clock need to be for 4 o'clock?

13.3.17: It's the 4th week of the Spring Term 2 and year 1 have been finding out what they have learnt so far this year. We have finished writing our invented 'Rags to riches' story, like the story we learn; 'The magic porridge pot.' Well done to everyone for all of their fantastic writing. We have been applying our maths skills to complete our mental arithmetic paper to see if we could beat our previous score. During golden time and afternoon play, some lucky children also got the chance to play in our Farm Grocery Shop in our role play area.

6.3.17: Year 1 have been super busy this week learning about our senses. What are our senses and how do they help us to understand the world around us? We tested our sense of smell by smelling a range of spices and herbs. We went on a sense hunt with Miss Hammond around the school, looking, listening, feeling and smelling the sites and sounds around us. We thought of adjectives to describe these items. Next week we will be thinking about tasting items for our healthy eating smoothies.

28.2.17: Pancake day! Year 1 created their very own pancakes by measuring the ingredients correctly and cooking them. We used weighing scales and measuring jugs to measure the milk and flour, then carefully cracked 1 egg and whisked these together. We had a choice of toppings; Riley loves strawberries and cream with his pancake. Damian chose to have all of the toppings. Miley and Kamile like sugar on theirs :)

20.2.17: We started the new term with an amazing week...This week we took part in a forest school in Devonport Park and a welly walk! We had the best day ever, playing games and foraging for things in the park. We went on a treasure hunt and collected twigs to build a campfire back at school. We enjoyed yummy marshmallows and hot chocolate around the campfire and had a go at lighting our own fire using a flint and stick onto cotton wool. Well done to all of the Year 1s for their sensible forest school work and super listening :)

6.2.17: This week is MONEY WEEK at Mount Wise. Year 1 have been thinking of ways to raise money for better golden time toys. We decided to hold a biscuit sale to the rest of the school to raise the funds. On Monday we learnt to recognise and count different coins. On Tuesday we learnt how to add coins and work out the correct change. On Wednesday we tried solving money word problems. On Thursday we measure and weighed our ingredients and made biscuits to decorate and sell to the school on Friday. On Friday break time we sold our biscuits and practise our money counting skills. Working out the correct change to give was very tricky but we were great and recognising the correct coins. Have a look at our yummy biscuits!

30.1.17: In science we have been learning about the seasons and different types of weather (especially rain!) We have learnt what the trees look like at different times of the year and which months fall into which seasons. We learnt which month our birthday is in and how many months until our next birthday. In maths we learnt about measuring objects by their weight, their size and the capacity of liquids.

23.1.17: In maths this week we have been sharing numbers equally to find answers to division questions. We had to make sure it was always FAIR - remembering to say 'one for me, one for you...etc' as we counted. In Talk 4 Writing we invented our own 'concurring the monster' story using our own ideas. In PE we learnt how to balance on one foot and how to use this skill in a game.

16.1.17: It is the second week back this term, and Year 1 have begun to think about innovating the story of George and the Dragon to write their own version. We have changed the main character and the monster into our own ideas. Damian wanted a brave knight called Olivia who slays a vampire. Amelia decided to have a courageous knight called Arna who kills a giant. In maths this week we worked at finding half and quarters of shapes and numbers, using our sharing mats and objects.

9.1.17: In the second week back to Year 1, we have been looking at finding 1 half and 1 quarter of shapes and numbers in maths. We used our sharing mats to find the fraction of numbers and looked and splitting shapes equally when finding fractions of a shape. We know that fractions must be fair/equal. In Talk 4 Writing this week we acted out the story of George and the Dragon in small groups and freeze-framed the key parts for our writing books.

3.1.17: Welcome back to the spring term at Mount Wise. We have been getting straight into our learning this week with learning the words and actions to our new Talk 4 Writing story; George and the Dragon. We know this story off-by-heart, which will help us to write our own story in a few weeks. We have been learning about the seasons and the months in the year for Science this week with Miss Hammond. We know it is currently Winter and we know what season we are most looking forward to.

28.11.16: In science/topic work this week Year 1 thought about how penguins keep warm in Antarctica? Why don't they freeze? What protects them from the very cold and harsh conditions? Riley thought that maybe the all huddle together. Mollie said that they keep waddling around to keep themselves warm. Harrison thought that maybe they are covered in fur. We put our hands into icy cold water - IT WAS FREEZING! Then we put our hand into a glove filled with fat (lard) and then put it back into the water. This time it was much, much warmer. We discovered that the fat acts like blubber inside the penguin and stops them from getting too cold!

21.11.16: Keeping Safe Week!

What a fantastic week. We had lots of brilliant visitors telling us how to keep us safe in various situations in and out of school; the police, the firemen, the land rescue team, NSPCC and dog's trust. We learnt lots and had a great week!

14.11.16: We have been practising our adding and subtracting skills this week. Well done to everyone who has practised their Mad Maths Minutes this week. Keep up the hard work Year 1! In topic we learnt about penguins and where they live. We talked about all the animals that live in the Antarctica and Arctic and discussed our favourite. We had a visitor from a local policeman to tell us how he helps to keep us all safe outside of school.

7.11.16: This week we have been practising our number bonds to 10. We have found lots of different ways to make 10. We learnt a song to help us remember! Watch the video again using this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-74-_3WSrD0

We have also been learning our new Talk 4 Writing story: Lost and Found. The poor penguin looks very sad, we discover that the penguin wasn't lost... he was lonely! Adding actions made it easier for us to remember the story and help us to write our own finding tale story in a few weeks.

31.11.16: Welcome back on Halloween with some spooky fun and fundraising! We have kicked started our new term with our latest topic 'Do penguins and polar bears live in the same place?' We will be looking into cold place - The North and South Poles, the animals that live there and what it would be like to live there!

17.10.16: WOW! What an amazing experience we had in the SPACE DOME this week! It was great to learn all about the stars and planets in the sky. We loved crawling into the dome and looking up at the night's sky. Can you test us on what we learnt? What was our favourite bit and why? Take a look at some of the pictures:

10.10.16: This week Year 1 have been learning to subtract/take away numbers by moving objects and taking them away, then counting how many we have left. We have done this using counters, teddy bears and beads. We have also begun learning to take away numbers by counting down/backwards along a number line. We know that when we take away, the number always gets smaller.

26.9.16: This week we have been tasting real space food! Riley really enjoyed it, and even had seconds. Amelia said it tasted like carrot and Mollie tried it, but didn't think she'd ever eat it again. We have also been learning about different materials with Mrs Wallace, and we learnt about materials that would be suitable to make our own space rockets. We looked at wood, plastic, glass, metal, material and experimented with their properties. We have also been improving our counting skills in maths by looking at numbers when we count in our 2s, 5s and 10s. Can you remember what we noticed when counting in these numbers?

19.9.16: What a busy week we have had this week. We have now learnt the story of 'The Way Back Home' off-by-heart and are learning to innovate this fantastic story using our own ideas. We are working in small groups to innovate the story and then have a go at writing it using our Fred fingers for spellings and including any red words we learnt for our spellings this week. In maths we are practising different ways to make numbers; as words, using Dienes and ones, counting cubes, drawing dots, number lines, number squares, number fans, counters, Numicon, counting beads and many more! We know there are lots of different ways to represent numbers. We have learnt about a very important man in history; Neil Armstrong. He was the first man on the moon and we watched a real video of the first moon landing! Take a look at our busy week...

12.9.16: This week we have been learning to count to 20, and practising different ways to order numbers. We looked at big numbers with 2-digits and played a game making these numbers with a partner using our number fans. We have learnt the story of 'The Way Back Home' off-by-heart using our story map. Can you practise the story at home with an adult? Dylan and Ashley have really enjoyed learning about space and dressing up as spacemen!

7.9.16: Welcome to Year 1! We start the year off with an exciting topic... What is it like on the moon? We will be exploring more about space travel, learning about the planets, the moon and materials in Science. Creating rocket ships in DT and space paintings in Art. We will be learning the story 'The Way Back Home' in Talk for Writing, using a story map to help us learn the story off-by-heart, with actions. Take a look at what we have planned for this term...

27.06.16: This week has been assessment week in Year 1. We have written a fantastic independent write of a Wishing Tale to go into our progress books, remembering the story mountain for a Wishing Tale story. We have also completed our final Mental Arithmetic paper for the Summer Term, children will be sending a copy to practise over the Summer Holiday. We had a fun art lesson learning how to create tints in colours (tinting them darker using black, and lighter using white). For MONEY WEEK we learnt how to count money and held a biscuit sale to raise school funds. Our target was £50. We smashed this target by raising a whopping £72.50 !! Well done to all the year 1s for their amazing counting money skills, biscuit making and the rest of the school for bringing in the money to buy some of our yummy biscuits.

Our new Story map that we are learning is The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch

20.06.16: Welcome back me 'earties! We are into the 3rd week of the 2nd Summer term and excited about our trip to visit The Golden Hind in a few weeks. Mr West has very kindly funded the travel and most of the entrance fee into the museum because we have worked so hard this year! This week we have learnt about Sir Francis Drake and why he is so important in history. We also learnt about The Golden Hind which is the name of his ship he sailed across the Pacific Ocean in. In art this week we learnt to make secondary colours by mixing two primary colours together. Once we had mixed these colours we painted a colour wheel into our art books. Take a look at our colour chaos afternoon...

13.06.16: This week we have been learning the poem 'I wish I was a pirate!' with actions for Talk 4 Writing. We know the poem off-by-heart and can retell it to you at home. We have been learning to solve missing number subtraction questions by counting along a number line and in our head. We are fantastic at counting up and down to 100! Test us at home and see.

06.06.16: Welcome back to the first week after half term! Our new topic is...
'What makes Plymouth a great place to live?' We will be learning all about Plymouth and why it is a good place to live, and the history of Plymouth. We will find out who Francis Drake is and why he is important to Plymouth. We will also be learning about pirates and maybe getting the chance to meet some!

23.05.16: It is the final week of our 'How does your garden grow' topic and we have learnt lots about plants, how they grow and how to look after them. We planted our flowers into the flower garden by the main building in school and will look after these over the next term. Good luck to everyone in year in the sunflower growing competition! The biggest sunflower will receive a prize at the end of the year, so make sure you look after them! Callum and Leja have been busy learning to count up and down to 20, by playing 'Leap frog' together with Miss Fifield.

16.05.16: On Wednesday this week we practised our measuring skills by estimating and measuring capacity using a variety of measuring jugs and containers. We also practised our ruler skills by measuring different lengths in cm using a ruler. We looked at finding the length of something using non-standard units of measurements; paper clips, hand-spans and cubes.

10.05.16: This week our new Talk 4 Writing story is 'Jasper's Beanstalk'. We have learnt the story with actions and Mr West let us perform it to the rest of the school in assembly on Friday. In maths we have learnt to measure capacity, volume and length. We wanted to find out who had the biggest feet in the class and who was the tallest. We drew around ourselves and measured it using a long ruler.

03.05.16: Woweee what an exciting week after the bank holiday Monday! We had our trip to Living Coasts in Torquay (it was amaaaazing!) we saw so many funny penguins, fish, seals and other birds. It was such a beautiful sunny day, we all had the best time ever!

YAY! Oskur's plant has finally started to grow...

25.04.16: In art this week we created some sculptures of natural objects using plasticine. Our flowers that we planted last week have finally started to grow. Callum's flower is the biggest so far! Hopefully they will flower over the bank holiday weekend and we can see some petals when we return on Tuesday. In maths this week we learnt our left and right and how to give instructions for directions (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full turns). In talk for writing we innovated the story of The Tiny Seed in small groups, using the best ideas from everyone. We also had a visit from the dentist at Plymouth University to test us on our knowledge of how to brush our teeth, and food that is good for our teeth and food that we should save for meal times. Can you remember which is which ?

18.04.16: This week for English - Talk 4 Writing - we have listened to and learnt the story of 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle. The same author who wrote 'A hungry caterpillar'. We have really enjoyed putting actions to the story to help us to remember it. Can the children tell you the story using the story map at home?

We also got our hands a bit dirty this week and planted some of our own seeds to grow in the classroom. Everyone had their own seeds to plant for the flowers that they wanted to grow. If we give them everything they need, hopefully they will grow in to beautiful flowers before the end of term!

11.04.16: Welcome back after a 2 week Easter break. I hope you all had a lovely Easter in the sunshine. Our new topic for this half term is 'How does your garden grow?' Where we will be learning all about plants, how they grow and growing some for ourselves. Keep practising your Mad Maths Minute every day to get yourself a 'Wow', a prize and to move your superhero up to the next level. We have been learning how to divide by sharing and grouping this week in maths. We have also learnt how to draw arrays neatly to help us with multiplications.

25.03.16: It's our final week for the Spring term, and we had a visit from the Easter bunny! Year 1 and Year 2 had to hunt for his eggs that were hidden around the school in order to receive our very own chocolate egg :-) Yummy! Well done to everyone for locating his eggs!

14.03.16: What a busy week! Science week has been fantastic. We had a special visitor, Mr G, who showed us an amazing science show with explosions and fire! We also got the chance to explore some  science experiments for ourselves; We made giant bubbles in the playground and x-ray skeletons using black play-dough and sticks. On Friday we walked or ran 1 mile to help to raise money for Sport Relief. Well done to everyone that took part and came to school in their team colours!

07.03.16: It's assessment week in Year 1 and we have been showing how much we have learnt in the year so far. We have had a busy week with our independent writing and maths work. So many children have been practising their Mad Maths Minute every night to get 30/30 and move up their superhero in the classroom! Well done to the children who are working super hard to beat their score. We have finished learning the story of Funnybones, and we invented our own version. Some children were very creative with their ideas!

29.02.16: This week year 1 have been learning lots more about our bodies and how to keep them fit and healthy. In maths, we have been exploring flat 2D shapes - how can we sort them? What is similar/different? Well done to everyone who finally got 30/30 in their mad maths minute tests!! :-) In Talk 4 Writing we have started innovating Funnybones into our own version. Oskur read his fantastic story to the class about minions living in a dark ,dark house. On Thursday we dressed up as our favourite book character for World Book Day, take a look at our fantastic costumes...

22.02.16: Welcome back after the half term holidays. This term Year 1 will be exploring 'Our body' and 'How does our body work?' We will be learning the story of Funny Bones for our Talk 4 Writing and we will be continuing with our Mad maths minute tests.

08.02.16: As it's our final week of the term, we have been finishing our 'Mad maths' minute tests, making and eating pancakes and we visited the Planetarium at Plymouth University to learn about Geoffrey the giant, and how to keep our teeth healthy! The University kindly gave us all a pack to take home, containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, games, 2 minute timer and lots more exciting teeth related freebies!

01.02.16: This week we have been doing some fantastic maths division and multiplication work. We know that when we share it must be fair. And we know that to multiply we can draw pizza and pepperonis to help us. We are getting good at our 'Mad maths minute' tests but we need to make sure we are practising at home so we can beat our score in maths the following day. Once you have got 30/30 and in 1 minute, you can move your superhero up and complete the next 'Mad maths minute' challenge! On Thursday afternoon this week we made our kites that we previously designed. Although it wasn't very windy, we had a race to see whose kite flew the best. All of the kites were brilliant, but in particular, Lilly and Favour's kite flew the highest.

25.01.16: This week in maths we have been measuring length, capacity and weight. We ordered containers by which we thought would hold the most to which we thought would hold the least. We were surprised to find out that tall containers don't always hold the most amount of water, it was important to look at the width of the container too. Take a look at what we have been busy doing this week...

18.01.16: Year 1 have been busy practising for their class assembly this week. We re-told our Talk 4 Writing story: Rain through a shadow puppet show. Callum was fantastic on the drums and using his rain maker to make the sound of the rain. Take a look at our rainmakers that we made from cardboard tubes, then decorated with tissue paper, paint, glitter and wool. We filled them with beads, seeds, rice and buttons to make a rain sound when we turn them.

11.01.16: Our second week back to school and we have had a jam-packed week, with learning how to find 1/4 and 1/2 of numbers using our sharing mats. We got busy on Friday making our rainmakers for our class assembly next Friday and we have been practising our typing skills in computing. We now know our Talk for writing story really really well and have put actions to help us remember the words.

04.01.16: HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome back to Mount Wise for the start of the New Year. This week we have got straight back into our learning. We have set ourselves a new year's resolution that (fingers crossed) we can keep for the year. Look at some of our fantastic writing...

7.12.15: We are sooooooo excited to show our parents and carers our fantastic Christmas performance next week at the end of this term! We know all of the songs and are ready to say our lines loudly and clearly. In maths this week we measured the ingredients to make stained glass window biscuits to hand on our Christmas trees at home. Smashing the boiled sweets was tricky but the final product looks great!

30.11.15: This week Year 1 have been busy practising for our Christmas performance and we had a visitor from the Dog's trust to teach us how to care for our dogs. We learnt that they need at least 2 walks a day, lots of water and dog food twice a day. We learnt what to do if a nasty dog approaches us. In maths this week we learnt our bonds to 10 and 20 using coloured counters and egg boxes to help us.

23.11.15: Wow what an amazing trip to Pennywell Farm this week!! We had the best time performing the Christmas Nativity in the barn with all the real animals! Ella got to ride the donkey and the Shepherds had to look after their flock of lambs. Santa popped in to say hello in the barn and then we were lucky enough to meet him in his grotto where he gave us an early Christmas present for being good boys and girls. Have a look at some of our photos from our trip!

16.11.15: This week we have been baking biscuits to sell which will help to fund our Pennywell Farm trip to visit Santa. Thank you soooooo much to everyone who came to purchase a biscuit, we managed to raise over £100 to pay for our trip to Pennywell Farm and even some left over to help towards our Christmas production! THANK YOU!

9.11.15: Year 1 have had a super busy week this week, learning about money by counting coins and making totals with coins to £1, we have also been innovating our story of Handa's Surprise by adding in the actions of those sneaky animals, and looking further into our topic of Animals, what makes them different? We even dug up some soil in search for some worms for our Worm World (our new class pets)! Friday we had fun re-using our Superhero costumes to help raise money for Children in Need. Take a look at some of Year 1 working hard this week!

2.11.15: Welcome back after the first half term to our new topic: Animals, and what makes them all different? We will be looking at a range of different animals that live in different habitats. Our new Talk for Writing story is 'Handa's Surprise' which is based in Africa and involves lots of sneaky African animals stealing Handa's fruit! We will be immersing ourselves in the story, innovating it as a class, and then generating our own story based on Handa's Surprise.

19.10.15: It's our final week of the first school term. We have had such good fun learning about superheroes! Our next topic will be 'animals' for the new school term. During our final week we had two special visitors from the local police service, who let us try on their safety jackets and even go in their police car!

12.10.15: Year 1 have had exciting week this week, with a visit from the Fire service. We were allowed to explore the fire engine and even squirt the water from the hose! In maths this week we have been adding numbers together and taking them away (subtracting) to find the difference. This was tricky so we built towers with cubes to help us.

5.10.15: During talk for writing this week, Year 1 have learnt the instruction map for 'How to make Hawkboy' to inspire us to write our own set of instructions for our own superhero. We have been putting actions to our story map and acting it out with the vocabulary. On Friday we got to spend some money at the school fair, with sweet stalls, face painting and lots of game to play! In maths we were sorting 2D and 3D shapes by their properties. We had lots of fun following instructions to make superhero cuffs and put on our cape we designed to wear to assembly. Have a look at our fantastic costumes!...

28.9.15: This week we have been getting crafty with junk modelling, designing and making our own superhero vehicles like the bat-mobile! We also finished our stories for Talk 4 Writing and wrote about our midnight superheroes. During maths we got messy painting caterpillars and writing odd and even numbers under each leg. Check out our hard work...

21.9.15: Year 1 have learnt lots about people who look after us, and people who help us this week as part of our 'Superheroes' topic. We have also been chilling in the reading garden in our classroom where we can read our favourite books quietly with our friends.

14.9.15: We have been printing this week in the style of Andy Warhol, using bright colours and printing ink. We drew our objects from home onto polystyrene, rolled on the ink and printed onto brightly coloured paper. We have also been learning the story of 'Eliot, Midnight Superhero' during Talk 4 Writing, putting actions to the story to help us remember the key events.

7.9.15: This week year 1 have had a brilliant first week back after the summer holidays exploring Superheroes and what makes them super! We even got the chance to dress up and be a Superhero during our golden time on Friday.

Our topic this half term is 'What makes a Superhero super?' We will be exploring Superheroes and their powers, creating our own Superhero, designing and making a superhero vehicle, testing which materials are best for a cape and discovering the famous Pop Artist; Andy Warhol.
