Attendance

Attendance Matters

At Mount Wise Community Primary School, we believe that every school day matters. Regular attendance gives children the best possible opportunity to learn, make progress, build friendships and enjoy everything that school has to offer.

Our expectations

We expect all children to attend school every day and arrive on time, unless they are genuinely too unwell to attend.

Being in school regularly helps children to:

  • Keep up with their learning and make good progress
  • Develop positive relationships and friendships
  • Build confidence, independence and good routines
  • Take part in clubs, activities, trips and special events
  • Develop the habits and skills they need for the future

Everyday counts

Even a small amount of absence can quickly add up. Missing school regularly can mean missing important learning and experiences that are difficult to catch up.

Being in school every day really does make a difference.

We encourage families to make attendance a priority and to arrange routine appointments, holidays and other commitments outside of school hours wherever possible.

Arriving on time

Being on time is just as important as attending. Arriving late can mean children miss the start of lessons, important instructions and valuable learning time. It can also make children feel unsettled when they enter the classroom after the day has begun.

Please make sure your child arrives at school on time and ready to learn.

If your child is unwell

We understand that children will sometimes be too unwell to attend school. If your child is absent, please inform the school as soon as possible and provide a reason for the absence.

If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to come to school, please speak to us. We are always happy to offer support and advice.

Working together

Good attendance is a partnership between school, children and families. We want to work with parents and carers in a supportive and positive way to help every child attend regularly.

If you have concerns about your child’s attendance or there are circumstances affecting their ability to attend school,

please talk to us as early as possible. We are here to listen and help.

Be here. Be proud. Be part of it.

Holidays

We have recently seen an increase in the number of families taking holidays during term time. We recognise that it is often expensive to take a holiday during school breaks and that is why some parents may ask for term time leave for their children. However, it is important that parents carefully consider the implications of taking their child out of school during term time.

The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013 came into force on the 1 September 2013. The amendments make it clear that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. If you choose to take your child out of school for a holiday during term time which has not been authorised, you may be liable for a fine from Plymouth City Council.
