Welcome to Foundation at Mount Wise Community Primary School

At Mount Wise Community Primary School, nestled in the heart of Devonport, Plymouth, we believe that a child’s early education should be as exciting, engaging, and inspiring as possible. In our Foundation class, we create a nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel safe, valued, and motivated to explore the world around them.

We are proud to follow a curiosity and play-based approach to learning, which means that we centre our teaching around the natural interests and questions of our children. Every day is different, led by what the children are eager to explore. Whether they’re fascinated by bugs in the garden, a favourite storybook character, or building imaginative creations in the construction area, we use these interests as springboards for deeper learning.

Our experienced team carefully designs a rich and varied environment that encourages children to ask questions, solve problems, work together, and develop their independence. Through play, they develop the foundations for lifelong learning - gaining vital skills in communication, language, social interaction, and self-confidence. We also weave early literacy and mathematics into everyday experiences, making them meaningful and relevant for young minds.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, but we do so in a way that is flexible and responsive. Our planning is informed by careful observation and based on the United Learning scheme, so we can tailor activities to suit the needs, interests, and developmental stages of each child. Whether it’s mark-making, storytelling, role play, exploring nature, or hands-on discovery in our indoor and outdoor classrooms, children are given the freedom to lead their learning - and we’re there to support, extend and celebrate every step of the journey.

Outdoor learning plays a big part in our daily routine. We are lucky to have access to fantastic outdoor spaces, and we make the most of them in all weathers. The natural world offers endless opportunities for exploration and learning, from building dens and digging for worms, to investigating seasonal changes and planting seeds.

Strong relationships are at the heart of our Foundation stage. We value the partnership between home and school and believe that parents and carers play a vital role in a child’s early development. We work closely with families to ensure that every child feels confident, settled, and ready to thrive.

At Mount Wise, we celebrate each child as a unique individual. Our goal is to spark a lifelong love of learning, laying strong foundations for success and happiness throughout their school life and beyond. We are proud to be a part of such a vibrant and diverse community and look forward to welcoming your child to our Foundation class.
